The Wolford hosiery story began in the post-World War II era, 1949 to be exact. The shortage of "nylons" during the war stimulated a demand for pure silk stockings, which Wolford leveraged into the basis for a worldwide hosiery empire. Wolford based their technology on American cotton machines, altering them as needed, which gave them a leg up on the competition. To this day, Wolford excels in advanced hosiery knitting technology. The brand name originated from that of founder Reinhold Wolff, which was combined with the last letters of the town of Oxford, England. The actual knitting know-how came from an historic textile region where France, Germany and Switzerland intersect at Lake Constance. Wolford quickly expanded its operations, and in 1988 moved to position itself in the luxury hosiery arena. Over the years, this internationally-recognized brand has diversified its hosiery offerings successfully.
